The TEACH Group provides the Interactive Metronome Program via the Occupational Therapy, and/or Behavior Therapy Departments.

Interactive Metronome (IM) is an evidence based learning and assessment tool.  IM is proven to improve cognition, attention, focus, memory, speech/language, executive functioning, comprehension, as well as motor and sensory skills.

It is a computer based program that consists of:

  1. Main Station that connects to a computer
  2. Headphones for auditory feedback
  3. Hand and foot triggers
  4. IM Universe Software that includes 24 animated interactive games.

Interactive Metronome challenges the client to synchronize a range of whole body exercises to a beat. A score is provided in milliseconds. The game-like features engage the client with auditory and visual guidance and provide real-time feedback while encouraging them to improve their scores.

Populations that would benefit from Interactive Metronome include:

  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Sensory Processing
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Developmental Delays
  • Speech-Language or Auditory issues

How does IM work?

Focus and concentration are dependent on the mechanism of timing. Much of our lives evolve around timing: reading…sleep…speaking…walking…dancing. Synchronizing the body’s “internal clock” helps the functional brain networks communicate rhythmically and efficiently. This communication between the brain and body allows all systems to be working at peak levels. When everything is working at the optimal level, the brain’s cognitive processes are free to work on memory, processing, and coordinating action, all while maintaining focus.
